Poetry Memorization:
We are spending the first few weeks of this month looking at poetry. This week we are specifically studying Ken Nesbitt's poem New Years Day. Students need to select and practice reciting a 16 line poem for our poetry memorization competition. Students will be assessed on their MEMORY SKILLS (fluency, level of difficulty of poem) DELIVERY OF POEM (speed, volume, enunciation, expression - voice, expression - face, enthusiasm, gestures) and STAGE PRESENCE (posture, hand action - no fidgeting, eye contact, ease of delivery/comfort). There are no props or cue cards allowed. We will have some time in class to memorize poems, but students should be doing so at home as well.
Please submit a copy of the 16 line poem that your child will be memorizing by Friday, January 8. We will be having our completion on Thursday, January 21. Two students will be selected from our class to present their poems at an even bigger competition on February 11. If you are having a hard time finding a poem, try googling Ken Nesbitt. He has some humorous poetry. Even typing in poetry for kids will show up with lots of great results. :)
Mad Science Workshop:
We are very excited to have a scientist come to our classroom on Thursday, January 14 to teach us more about forces. They will be here from 9-11am. It is very beneficial for your child to be at school that morning as this will be a large focus of this unit.
